Our Home, The Kenai Peninsula
The Kenai Peninsula is usually referred to as “The Banana Belt” of Alaska. While we would be naïve to think that you can actually grow bananas in Alaska, the climate stays relatively moderate due to the protected waters of Cook Inlet on one side and Prince William Sound on the other, which creates a beautiful habitat for wildlife and humans alike.
The Kenai Peninsula is world renowned for its scenic mountains, rivers, lakes and beaches. When you see it for yourself, you will cease to wonder how the relatively short drive from Anchorage to Kenai is voted in the top ten most scenic drives of the United States. And, of course, there is the fishing, hiking, camping, boating, snow machining (otherwise known as snowmobiling in all southern states), biking up paths to glaciers or hidden lakes, and all other outdoor recreation that many tourists come up to experience.
Kenai and its Sister Town, Soldotna
What most people don’t realize is that while still keeping a small town feel, Kenai and Soldotna have experienced a good amount of growth, giving you many of the amenities and entertainment provided in a larger, more metropolitan area as well. Some of these typical recreational activities include an indoor pool with slide, bowling, golf, Frisbee golf, beach, playgrounds, movie theatre, shopping and dinner venues, as well as school sports, concerts and plays, and city league sports. There are several choices for schooling for children and teenagers alike, with private, charter, and public school options.
Also, Alaska offers financial and recreational opportunities beyond compare. There is no state income or sales tax; and each year every member in your family receives a yearly dividend from oil revenues.
If you need to get out of the small town feel for a while, Anchorage is just a 15 minute hopper flight away, or you can take the 2.5 hour scenic drive through the mountain pass and along Turnagain Arm (A body of water called that by Captain Cook as he realized it was not the Northwest Passage he was hoping for) that is ranked in the top ten most scenic drives in the United States. In Anchorage, there is a host of big city activities and entertainment, including malls, outlets, and all the regular shopping centers and stores.
